The Difference Between a Wireless Internet Provider LISP and WISP
While you are still researching for a service provider that will give you great wireless internet, there are some extra things and terminology that you need to know. This post will help you with that and you will be better able to understand the jargon that tech support or sales people may throw upon you.
We will first start with these two:
- LISP
- WISP

LISP -in the context of this article and the topic we are talking about, this stands for Local Internet Service Provider. This means that you are getting your internet from a company that is specifically servicing your area. It could also mean that the infrastructure itself is local. This means that you have a wired connection and the infrastructure is physically to your door and therefore local.
WISP – this acronym on the other hand stands for Wireless Internet Service Providers. It is not the same as wifi service providers. The W does not stand for Wide like in LAN and WAN. A wireless internet provider does not need to be local. They can just be using some satellites as part of their operations and outsourcing local technical support when the need arises.
When it comes to WISPs, people are always wanting to know the best internet provider and the one with the highest high speed wireless internet. There is more to choosing an ISP than just that. I have written many other posts that inform you on the things to look out for so that you can get the best wireless internet provider for you. The best may be different for you and some one else with different needs so you need to be careful of this.
I have thrown in some other acronyms above which are not explained. Let me do so now:
LAN – Local Area Network. This definition almost speaks for itself. It refers to a network that is within the same local area. By local we mean the same house or floor or building, not suburb or city.
WAN – Wide Area Network. This also speaks for itself but can have different applications. One company can have a WAN where they have many offices but it can also refer to the world network or internet.
ISP – Internet Service Provider. These are the people that provide you with your internet service. When we talk about wireless internet providers, we are talking about getting you a great ISP.
Hopefully this post has cleared up some things for you and made acronyms and jargon a little bit clearer than before.
